Ajanta and Ellora: How to Plan Two Usable Visiting Days
Plan an Ajanta and Ellora itinerary around weekly closures, arrival and departure times, with two separate cave days and a sensible one-day alternative.

Allow two usable sightseeing days for Ajanta and Ellora, with one cave complex on each day. That is our planning recommendation for a first visit, not an official minimum. Check the weekdays before choosing the order: Ajanta is closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays. If you have only one full day, choosing one site is usually more rewarding than trying to collect both names on an itinerary.
Start with the calendar: two hotel nights do not necessarily give you two sightseeing days. Count the hours actually available after arrival and before departure, then protect lunch, travel and rest time around each visit.
In this guide: count usable days · choose the order · choose one if time is short · build a comfortable day · common questions.
Ajanta and Ellora need separate usable days
Both are major rock-cut heritage sites, but they are separate excursions. The Archaeological Survey of India places Ajanta approximately 107 km from Aurangabad, now also known as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Ellora approximately 30 km from the city. Those are city-to-site distances, not the distance between the two cave complexes, and they are not driving-time promises.
Using one base can simplify your hotel arrangements, but it does not remove the travel around each visit. When you read a proposed itinerary, ask for the hotel departure, entrance arrangements, sightseeing allowance, lunch and return to be shown separately. A day described only as “Ajanta and Ellora sightseeing” can conceal a pace you would never choose once the parts are visible.
For a first visit to both, a useful framework is arrival and rest, two separate sightseeing days, then departure. That may mean three hotel nights if you arrive the evening before the first excursion and leave after the second night’s rest. Different flight or train times can change the night count; the aim is to protect the days rather than prescribe a fixed package.
Let the weekly closures decide the order
The ASI Ajanta page lists opening from 09:00 to 17:00, with Monday closure. The ASI Ellora page lists sunrise to sunset, with Tuesday closure. Recheck those arrangements for your travel dates before committing to transport or non-refundable plans.
Sunday and Monday available: put Ajanta on Sunday and Ellora on Monday.
Monday and Tuesday available: visit Ellora on Monday and Ajanta on Tuesday.
Tuesday and Wednesday available: visit Ajanta on Tuesday and Ellora on Wednesday.
Other two-day combinations: choose the order around arrival, energy and your priorities, while checking that both sites are open.
Do not automatically put the shorter excursion on arrival day and assume that creates a second full day. A delayed flight, baggage collection, hotel check-in and lunch can consume the useful part of an afternoon. Treat any visit after a substantial journey as optional unless the actual timings comfortably support it.

If you have one day, how do you choose?
First rule out the site closed that day. With a Monday available, Ellora is the option from this pair; with a Tuesday available, Ajanta is. If both are open, choose the experience you most want rather than attempting to compress two substantial excursions into one.
Give Ajanta priority if its Buddhist cave setting and paintings are the reason for your journey, and you can devote the day to the longer excursion from the city. Allow patient viewing rather than planning a fast circuit whose success depends on reaching every cave.
Give Ellora priority if your main interest is its rock-cut architecture and the Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monuments. Its closer position to the city can make it easier to fit around a limited stay, but the shorter road distance does not make the site itself a quick stop.
For travellers with limited walking stamina, choose a focused visit and discuss current access at the specific areas you want to see. Do not assume every cave or path has the same steps, surfaces or access. A shorter selection with time to sit and look is a valid visit, not a failed attempt to see everything.
Build each day around viewing, food and rest
Before leaving: have breakfast, confirm the current opening arrangements and agree where you will meet your driver after the visit. Ask which admissions, local transfers or guiding arrangements are separate from the car booking.
During the visit: choose a manageable sequence with your guide or at the visitor information point. Take breaks before tiredness makes the return uncomfortable. Follow current photography and conservation instructions; do not assume that a camera or flash is permitted everywhere.
At lunch: leave a genuine meal and rest interval. Avoid treating food as something to fit into the car while racing towards another monument.
Afterwards: keep the evening light. If you still want another activity, make it optional rather than a commitment that shortens the cave visit.
For families and mixed-age parties, decide beforehand whether everyone wants the same depth of visit. A traveller interested in paintings may want to linger where another would prefer a shorter overview. Set the day’s shared priorities early, and avoid promising a fixed number of caves as a measure of value.
When considering a car-and-driver arrangement, ask whether this Maharashtra section can be provided for your dates, with two separate cave days and clearly stated local guiding arrangements. Compare the vehicle options with your party and luggage, subject to local availability. A general service description is not confirmation of availability on this route.
Keep departure day out of the calculation
An evening departure can look like a free sightseeing day on paper. In practice, you still need the journey back, luggage collection if applicable, a meal and the check-in or station arrival margin required by your transport provider. Do not build an essential Ajanta visit around a narrow connection. If you are flying between regions, use our domestic flight and road-transfer checklist to confirm who is arranging each part.
If a fixed departure leaves only one comfortable full day, choose one site or extend the stay. When comparing wider India tour options, make the cave section fit the pace of the whole trip instead of borrowing every rest period from the next destination.
Questions about planning Ajanta and Ellora
Can Ajanta and Ellora be visited in one day?
We recommend choosing one if you have only a single full day. The complexes are separate excursions, and combining them leaves less room for viewing, meals and breaks. Two usable days allow one site per day. Check the weekly closure first, then choose according to your interests and the actual journey from your hotel.
Which should we visit on a Monday and Tuesday?
Plan Ellora on Monday and Ajanta on Tuesday. ASI lists Ajanta as closed on Monday and Ellora as closed on Tuesday. Reconfirm current arrangements before travel, and keep each visit on its own day rather than interpreting the closure pattern as a reason to rush both into the remaining open hours.
Are two hotel nights enough?
Only if your arrival and departure genuinely leave two comfortable sightseeing days. An evening arrival followed by two nights and an early departure provides just one full day. Work from your actual transport times, then add the nights needed; do not assume the number of nights equals the number of usable days.
Does a car-and-driver booking include a cave guide?
Do not assume that it does. Confirm the scope of the car service, local guiding, admissions and any site-specific transfers separately. Ask for the guide’s language, meeting point, duration and availability in the proposal. A driver’s role in road transport is different from cultural interpretation within a heritage site.
Ask about including Ajanta and Ellora in your India journey. Send your arrival and departure details, preferred pace and main interests so that availability and the proposed arrangements can be confirmed.
Opening arrangements checked against ASI guidance on 26 October 2026. Two-day pacing and hotel-night examples are recommendations. Reconfirm opening, access and transport arrangements for your dates.
